From 1957 to today

With engineering as the first and founding Faculty of the University of Waterloo, our history is both brief (less than 60 years) and colourful (we tend to do things in an unorthodox manner). In less than six decades, we have risen from being the new kid on the engineering education block to that of Canada’s largest engineering Faculty with a global reputation for uniquely preparing students for the future. As you read our history in the timeline below, you will see remarkable episodes of prescient thinking and a boldness seldom found in a university setting. Because engineers are problem solvers, decision-makers and people of action, you will see how we’ve succeeded, perhaps even beyond the imaginations of our founders.
